The main target for this match would to be skimmers/bream with a chance of a carp.
There had been a match the previous day and it had fished very well but with heavy overnight rain I expected it would fish a bit harder so I guessed 20 - 30lb would probably be a decent weight.
I drew peg 31 which is on the right side of the lake, I had never fished on this bank before.
At the start I fed a 13m line with a ball of groundbait with micro pellets and at 5m a ball of groundbait with a handful of casters and a few maggots, then fished the method for an hour hoping for a carp or a few bream, neither of which came along.
Switching to the pole, I tried both lines, at 13m with a 4mm expander and at 5m with double maggot. The 5m swim started to produce a few skimmers but hardly any bites at 13m.
After several fish at 5m I fed again the same as before and had another look at 13m, trying expander and maggot hook baits with little success, back on 5m and started to catch some better skimmers.
This pattern repeated itself a couple of times, the 13m swim producing very little so I fed it again but this time added a handful of casters and a few maggots, after continuing on the 5m line for a while I went back out to 13m and some nice skimmers had arrived so now I was able to switch between the 2 swims after after every 2 or 3 fish.
The last 20 minutes was good on the 5m line with several skimmers of all sizes hitting the net.
My net of skimmers went 29lb which I was pleased with and this turned out to be good enough for 3rd in the match as it had been hard going over on the low numbers.
