Only 11 participants on this one, mainly I presume due to the hills to climb after the match to get back to the car park but also on this lake the carp can be very difficult to catch until later in the afternoon.
We had a bit of a vote by email and a match time of 10am to 4pm had been decided upon, due to the above point.
Today I set up a feeder rod to fish up to the little island, a pole rig to fish at around 5m out with hard pellets and a margin rig for both sides down the edge.
For bait I had decided on 4mm and/or 6mm pellets for the 5m line, meat to the right margin and a groundbait and dead maggot approach for the left margin.
I started by casting a small hybrid feeder to the island a couple times but all I got was liners so then I went to my 5m line, throwing a few 4mm pellets every few minutes and a 6mm banded pellet as hook bait. This went OK as I steadily put a few carp in the net for the first half of the match. Until the half way point I had been throwing a few 6mm pellets to the left margin and 6mm cubes of meat to the right margin, I now decided to start putting in big pots of groundbait and some dead maggots to the left and after another 30 minutes I had a look here with a bunch of dead maggots on the hook. I would get a carp or 2 then put in another pot of bait, in the last 30 minutes of the match I would sometimes get a bite within seconds of lowering the bait in straight after a feed.
I had tried the other margin with meat now and then in the last 2 hours but did not get a bite on it.
Finishing with 29 carp, 2 skimmers and 2 brown goldfish for 137lb 4oz, this got me second in the match.
